Van 28 feb t/m 2 mrt zagen duizenden bezoekers van het prestigieuze Adelaide Festival Romeinse tragedies. Het publiek was uitzinnig over de voorstelling en twitterde massaal. #romantragedies was het hele weekend trending topic. Ook de pers was lovend: ‘Roman Tragedies is a theatrical triumph, and more than deserving of the standing ovation and multiple curtain calls it received on opening night. Without doubt, one of the very best productions of the year.’ aldus Artshub, de grootste Australische portal over kunst.
De verwachtingen waren hoog gespannen met de introductie die festivaldirecteur David Sefton enkele dagen voordien in The Guardian gaf: 'It’s in my top 10 shows of all time, and you can imagine how much I see in this job. It’s a fantastic piece of work and at the centre of it are a bunch of the best actors in Europe.'
Unaniem oordelen gerenommeerde Australische recensenten uiterst positief over de theatermarathon. ‘Roman Tragedies is a Dutch triumph. No doubt about it.', volgens The Adelaide Review. InDaily schrijft ‘No matter how clever a theatrical concept, great shows require brilliant acting to be truly memorable, and the Toneelgroep Amsterdam actors are superb in their naturalistic delivery.’ The Advertiser, de grootste Zuid-Australische tabloid, bloklettert: ‘Director Ivo Van Hove has been endlessly inventive. (…) There was no doubting the great skills of the performers, and of Hans Kesting in particular, as Antonius. His speeches, like great arias, could bring rounds of applause.’ Ook The Guardian prijst Romeinse tragedies: ‘Toneelgroep’s Roman marathon has a singularity of purpose that holds your attention from the opening blow to the very last asp.’ en de voorstelling is niet te missen volgens ABC Arts: ‘For all the mediations presented in the production, this is total theatre, miraculously unmediated, Shakespeare remade as our contemporary again. Unmissable.’
TA reisde dit seizoen voor het eerst naar Adelaide maar is geen onbekende in Australië, eerder dit jaar stond La voix humaine nog op het Sydney Festival. Romeinse tragedies ging tijdens het Holland Festival 2007 in première en werd geselecteerd voor het Theaterfestival van Nederland en Vlaanderen. Daarna reisde de voorstelling naar Braunschweig, Wenen, Avignon, Zürich, Wroclaw, Montreal, Quebec, Londen, Barcelona en New York. Overal ter wereld worden TA-voorstellingen in het Nederlands gespeeld en voorzien van boventiteling.
